The
steel-and-concrete modules were built in an enclosed facility in Ephrata, Pa.,
which kept them largely immune to the weather and normal production delays
associated with the traditional construction process. Lehman estimates that, as
a result, the interval from groundbreaking to occupancy will be reduced by
approximately half the time, providing a significant savings in time and
construction costs.
Containing
not only walls but also windows, flooring, lighting, plumbing fixtures and other
major elements, the modules were 99 percent complete when they were trucked to
the Bronx. All of the modules were lifted onto the site's concrete foundation in just three days (9/25-9/27). The contractor will make final
connections between modules and to utilities, finish site work, install final
interior finishes and paint unfinished walls.
